Is It A Newspaper Or A Magazine

Monday, February 21, 2011

On February 2, 2011 The Daily for the Apple iPad was launched.

The Daily has promoted itself as a newspaper exclusively for the iPad. Each day new articles are published and put out just like a print newspaper.

An iPad user downloads the app and pays 99 cents per week or a year subscription for $39.99. Then the user is set to read to his or her heart's content.

It has been speculated however that The Daily is not a newspaper but a magazine. These claims have been based on visuals more present than text.

In my opinion The Daily is neither one. Both newspapers and magazines have a large amount of context bewteen the pages.

An issue of The Daily only has a handful of stories. And once those stories are gone they are gone unlike newspapers and magazines which can have stories from months or years gone by.

To me The Daily is ridiculous, why pay for news when it can be read online for free with an unlimited amount of stories?

I feel this application is really just a bulletin highlighting a few stories.

What's your take?

I see is as more of a bridging-the-gap kind of utility. It doesn't have much content yet but it does have the visuals and some features that will attract a larger audience once it can fix the lack of original and plentiful content. I imagine the next group that makes a "clone" of The Daily will do it better, fixing the first attempt's mistakes and becoming popular. Then, The Daily will come out with new features, content, etc. until healthy competition forces them to be as good as they can be.

It is hard to tell what type of news source The Daily is because it is still in the works of growing. Surely, they will have new features and adapt to suggestions made by others in order to improve the program, making it better as well as changing people's opinions towards it.

I agree with Ben. The Daily is brand new, there are going to be improvements based on what the readers want. Paying $.99 a week doesn't seem like that much to people who are buying a daily newspaper that costs $.75 or more. And if people don't want to pay for it, the Daily will change or die. Free news is said to be going away online, and if that happens, I imagine less than a dollar per week isn't going to be that bad of a price.
